Description

Shell Freezing – Classic Sample Preparation for Enhanced Freeze-Drying Efficiency

Shell freezing remains one of the most effective methods for preparing samples for lyophilization. By evenly freezing a thin layer of product inside the walls of flasks, this method significantly improves drying efficiency and processing volume.

Motorized stainless steel rollers automatically rotate the flasks in a chilled bath containing alcohol or another suitable fluid at either -50 °C or -75 °C. The result is a uniform coating of frozen material lining the inner “shell” of the flask – ideal for optimizing freeze-drying cycles.

Key Features and Benefits

  • Maximized efficiency: The thin frozen layer reduces the need for moisture to migrate through thick ice, accelerating the drying process
  • High throughput: One or two baths can process up to two 2000 ml flasks or six 150 ml flasks at once
  • System integration: Shellbath units can be installed as an option on Freezemobile 25 or 35 models
  • Durable design: Two motor-driven stainless steel rollers ensure smooth, consistent rotation and freezing
  • Clean operation: Flask lifting devices create conical frozen coatings while protecting the lid, filter, and stopper from contamination

Shell freezing is a simple yet powerful tool for laboratories aiming to improve the efficiency and consistency of their freeze-drying processes across pharmaceutical, research, or biotech applications.
